The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has expressed its full endorsement of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, in response to recent calls for mass protests by the South Unity Youth Coalition. The NDYC urges youths in the South-South and South-East regions to dismiss these protest calls, which it describes as an attempt by individuals seeking to create political turmoil for personal gain.
In its statement, the NDYC firmly rebuts the accusations against Professor Yakubu and INEC, labeling them as unfounded and harmful to Nigeria’s democratic progress. Under Professor Yakubu’s guidance, INEC has introduced crucial reforms and technological innovations, including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and electronic transmission of results. These measures have significantly improved the transparency and credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.
The NDYC contends that the protest call is a calculated attempt to destabilize the electoral process and undermine the democratic gains achieved. The timing of the protest, coinciding with Democracy Day, is viewed as a deliberate effort to create discord and detract from the positive strides made in Nigeria’s democracy.
The NDYC calls on all Nigerians to reject these baseless claims and recognize the substantial contributions made by INEC under Professor Yakubu’s leadership. The organization reaffirms its robust support for INEC and its commitment to upholding the integrity of the electoral system.
Moreover, the NDYC urges youth organizations and civil society groups to engage constructively with INEC to address any legitimate concerns through dialogue and collaboration. Positive engagement is essential for the continued strengthening of Nigeria’s democracy.
The NDYC also issues a warning to the South Unity Youth Coalition, stating that any attempts to proceed with their protest will be met with strong resistance. The NDYC remains dedicated to promoting free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria and calls on all stakeholders to work together to protect and nurture the nation’s democracy rather than engaging in actions that could lead to instability.
